Review: Dell UltraSharp U2719DC monitor

av senses.se

Approximately eight years ago, senses.se shared office space with graphic designers specializing in print and film (areas in which Christian and Henric are also involved). Accurate color reproduction and comfortable viewing were paramount for their work. They introduced us to Dell, the American computer giant known for its high-quality monitors. While our previous references, the Dell U2412M and U2717D, are showing their age compared to more modern displays, their color management capabilities remain impressive. Therefore, the arrival of the Dell UltraSharp U2719DC sparked our interest. What advancements have been made in nearly a decade?

Beyond the immediately noticeable difference—the U2719DC’s 27″ screen compared to the 24″ of older models—it boasts a sleek and slim design right out of the box. Despite its size, the 27″ display feels surprisingly comfortable, even at typical viewing distances. The stand is both stable and easily assembled. The monitor itself is stylish, featuring ultra-thin bezels, making it ideal for multi-monitor setups in either horizontal or vertical configurations. The stand facilitates effortless rotation between portrait and landscape modes, simplifying cable management and eliminating the need for awkward maneuvering to access the downward-facing ports on the rear. This leads us to the Dell U2719DC’s first key feature: USB-C. While USB-C video transmission is not novel, Dell’s implementation includes power delivery, simultaneously charging compatible laptops with up to 65W. Consequently, a modern laptop can connect, display video, and charge using a single cable (assuming a wireless keyboard and mouse are used). This streamlined functionality is highly appreciated.

Image Quality

The U2719DC delivers accurate sRGB and REC 709 (SDR) color reproduction out of the box. The inclusion of factory calibration results specific to each unit is a welcome touch. Color accuracy has consistently been a strength of Dell monitors, and this model upholds that reputation. The Delta E deviation is notably low, remaining below 2 (values below 3 are generally imperceptible to the human eye). One initial observation is that the screen appears slightly subdued compared to Apple’s Retina LCD on the MacBook Pro or the BenQ EW277 HDR. The U2719DC also utilizes an IPS panel (similar to Retina displays), based on LCD technology. IPS offers a strong balance of image quality and value, providing wide viewing angles and accurate color representation compared to VA and TN panels. However, IPS panels are not without limitations; brightness uniformity can vary by over 10% across different areas, and contrast (black levels) is not particularly deep. In dimly lit environments, near-black areas can appear grayish due to the technology’s inability to disable the backlight or individual pixels (as is possible with OLED).

This is further emphasized by the absence of HDR, a key enhancement for color and contrast in modern displays. While we can accept the lack of 4K resolution (although it would be a desirable feature at this price point), the Dell U2719 operates at a maximum resolution of 2560x1440p, which is 1.77 times Full HD, or just under 2K, a resolution Dell markets as “QHD”. However, the absence of even the more basic HDR8 mode, which could have improved brightness, is a notable omission. The U2719DC reaches a peak brightness of nearly 400 cd/m2, which is respectable for an LCD, but users accustomed to OLED or HDR displays (even on LCD) might find the image somewhat restrained and lacking the characteristic brilliance.

The lack of HDR may be related to Dell’s specification of 85% coverage of the DCI-P3 (Wide Color Gamut) color space. However, our measurements indicate coverage closer to 70%. This is somewhat limiting for users planning to work extensively within that color space and impacts its suitability for modern movie viewing, although most YouTube content appears satisfactory.

Surprisingly Capable for Gaming

The U2719DC is not marketed as a dedicated gaming monitor. It has a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz and lacks support for Nvidia G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync. However, its gaming performance is surprisingly competent. Hearthstone looked excellent, with vibrant colors and sharp details. While some motion blur was observed in fast-paced FPS games like Call of Duty, it was less pronounced than on many other IPS panels. This may be attributable to the “fast response time” mode, which prioritizes image refresh rate at the expense of some image processing (similar to Game Mode on Panasonic televisions). The Dell monitor also performed well in the UFO test. Furthermore, no burn-in was observed during our testing period.

Summary: Dell U2719DC

The Dell U2719DC is a stylish, streamlined monitor featuring a convenient USB-C connection for simplifying connectivity and powering modern computers. The price may be considered somewhat premium relative to its overall performance. However, for general users focused on office tasks, occasional YouTube viewing (where absolute color and contrast fidelity are not critical), and light gaming, the Dell U2719DC represents a solid choice, particularly given the convenience of its USB-C connectivity for users who frequently connect and disconnect their laptops.

The 27″ monitor market is competitive. The BenQ EW277HDR, available for approximately 2,000 SEK, offers similar screen real estate and greater brightness due to its limited HDR support, albeit with less accurate color reproduction. While the Dell U2719DC is significantly more expensive and superior overall, the value proposition may not be twice as high. Alternative 27″ monitors with comparable image quality (but lacking USB-C) are available at lower price points. Dell also offers the S2719DC, a sister model with HDR support at a similar price. We hope to have the opportunity to evaluate and compare it in the future.

Ultimately, purchase decisions depend on budget and priorities. The Dell UltraSharp U2719DC is a capable all-around monitor, performing well in various applications without excelling in any single area. Professional users demanding class-leading color accuracy, particularly in the P3 color space, may require a more specialized display. Similarly, dedicated gaming monitors offer more gaming-centric features at a comparable cost. The Dell U2719DC distinguishes itself as a well-rounded, comfortable work monitor with an attractive design and intelligent features, making it a recommendable option for everyday use.
