Review: Spellbreak (Switch)

av Henric Brandt

I’ll admit my experience with Fortnite was brief, lasting only about ten to fifteen minutes after downloading it to my Nintendo Switch. Spellbreak shares some similarities with Fortnite: players descend from a significant height onto a large map, and engagements can often be swift, ending in elimination within seconds of encountering an opponent.

Spellbreak exhibits technical proficiency and polish; however, I find it difficult to fully engage with this particular genre. As mentioned, the expansive maps often lead to prolonged periods of traversal before encountering other players. Furthermore, a suboptimal network connection can result in a disadvantage, and insufficient character progression can lead to rapid elimination. The cycle of match, elimination, and reload can become repetitive.

My reservations stem from a general lack of patience for the Battle Royale genre. Another concern revolves around the game’s “free-to-play” model. While the initial download is free, gaining a competitive edge and mitigating frequent eliminations often necessitates in-game purchases to accelerate progression. The absence of spending limits raises concerns about potential costs for dedicated players.

Spellbreak performs adequately on the Switch in both portable and docked modes. The primary drawback is the diminutive text size in portable mode, which can strain readability. Gameplay generally remains consistent across both modes, although a stable, low-latency connection is crucial. Subjectively, the docked mode offered a slightly improved experience.

In conclusion, Spellbreak is a technically sound Battle Royale title. However, my personal preferences diverge from the genre, and I harbor reservations regarding the potential for a pay-to-win dynamic. Despite these concerns, the game remains a competent entry within the Battle Royale landscape and thus warrants a passing grade.
