Review: The Godfather Coda – The Death of Michael Corleone

av Henric Brandt

The Godfather trilogy is widely considered to be one of the most important film series ever made. It’s a staple on any list of must-see movies. Specifically, the first two installments are held in particularly high regard, with the third film often viewed as a less successful entry.

Director Francis Ford Coppola achieved cinematic landmark status with The Godfather (1972) and its sequel, The Godfather: Part II, released two years later. However, The Godfather: Part III didn’t premiere until 1990, a full 18 years after the second film. The production of the third installment was fraught with challenges. Coppola faced a compressed timeline, having only one year from script development to the film’s release. Winona Ryder was initially cast as Michael Corleone’s daughter but withdrew to participate in Edward Scissorhands. Ultimately, Sofia Coppola assumed the role, a decision reportedly influenced by the stressful production environment.

Having not seen the third film in quite some time, the casting of Sofia Coppola felt particularly jarring. Given the masterful quality of the first two films, the third has remained a point of contention for both Francis Ford Coppola and many fans.

Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone represents a re-edited version of the film, intended to more closely align with Coppola’s original vision. This version features a revised beginning and ending, and includes some scenes with increased intensity. However, the changes are not as extensive as, for instance, the Donner cut of Superman II, which incorporated entirely new scenes and significantly altered the narrative. This is more accurately described as a refinement of existing material.

The introduction in Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is more streamlined, and the revised opening contributes to a more cohesive narrative flow. This version is arguably superior to the original theatrical cut, as the modifications result in a clearer and more focused presentation.

The Blu-ray edition delivers a clean and sharp visual presentation, effectively masking the thirty years since the film’s initial release. The audio quality is adequate, although unremarkable, which is appropriate given the film’s emphasis on dialogue. The helicopter sequence provides a notable exception, offering a more immersive home theater experience. The release includes limited bonus content, consisting of a brief introduction to the new cut by Francis Ford Coppola.

In conclusion, while Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone represents an improvement over the original The Godfather: Part III, it cannot fully resolve the underlying issues that plagued the film. Despite the re-editing efforts, some inherent weaknesses remain. Nevertheless, this revised version is recommended for fans of the series. While it may not fulfill all expectations for a concluding chapter, it offers a more compelling viewing experience than its predecessor.
