Review: Natsuki Chronicles

av Henric Brandt

In Natsuki Chronicles, players follow the protagonist, Natsuki, from her early days as a rookie pilot to her becoming a seasoned professional. This title shares the same universe as Ginga Force, and its mechanics will be familiar to those acquainted with the bullet-hell genre. Gameplay is straightforward: players pilot their craft, shooting at enemy ships and navigating environments. The core mechanics are simple, yet effective.

Players confront waves of enemy ships, culminating in challenging boss encounters at the end of each level. A robust upgrade system allows for customization of your ship with various shields and weapons, a staple of the side-scrolling shmup genre. These upgrades are essential for progressing through the game.

Natsuki Chronicles is immediately accessible, captivating players from the outset of each level. Mastering enemy attack patterns is crucial for survival. Initially, the normal difficulty presented a significant challenge, hindering progress. Fortunately, the game offers adjustable difficulty settings, a welcome feature that can be altered at any time.

As with many Japanese titles, Natsuki Chronicles features an intricate narrative. However, the constant dialogue between characters during combat, presented in Japanese with English subtitles, poses a challenge. Simultaneously engaging with the intense action and reading subtitles proves difficult, potentially causing players to miss crucial plot points. While shorter cutscenes are included, key information appears to be delivered during gameplay, which can be easily overlooked without familiarity with the language.

The game’s visuals boast a distinct anime aesthetic, complemented by polished sound design. In conclusion, Natsuki Chronicles is a worthwhile experience, especially for fans of the shmup/bullet-hell genre. However, even dedicated enthusiasts may find the gameplay loop somewhat repetitive over time.
