Review: Doom 3 – VR Edition (PSVR)

Doom 3 was originally released 17 years ago. I initially played it on my Xbox 360, and even on a 32-inch CRT TV, the game’s atmosphere was genuinely terrifying. A sense of vulnerability permeated the experience; threats could emerge from any direction. The tension escalated dramatically in darkened areas where the flashlight was the sole source of illumination, significantly raising the stakes.

The announcement of a Doom 3 – VR Edition sparked immediate excitement, tempered by a hint of apprehension. Prior to immersing myself in Doom 3 – VR Edition, I spent time with less intense titles on Playstation VR to acclimate to the technology. The responsiveness of the VR system is noteworthy, exhibiting minimal latency between player movement and the visual display. The precision and fidelity are impressive. However, the resolution, even on the PS4 Pro, reveals the technology’s ongoing evolution, with visible pixelation. Utilizing high-quality, in-ear headphones with robust bass and clear audio is highly recommended, as larger headphones are incompatible with the PSVR headset.

As previously noted in our PSVR review from five years ago, the headset provides a comfortable fit and secure adjustments to prevent slippage during gameplay. Those who wear glasses, as I do, will find them easily accommodated within the headset. With the equipment in place, the experience begins. While the initial cutscenes are presented in a standard, non-VR format, the game world subsequently unfolds in full 360 degrees. The sense of immersion is immediate, and the intensity quickly escalates. Despite the passage of nearly two decades since my last playthrough, the game’s unsettling atmosphere remains.

Forward movement and strafing function as expected, allowing for seamless exploration. However, turning introduces a segmented, flashing effect designed to maintain player orientation. This artificial correction proves problematic, as natural turning during movement becomes jarring and induces motion sickness. A more refined implementation would be beneficial. The absence of a virtual body is also noticeable. The disembodied hands detract from the realism, and the inclusion of a full avatar would enhance the sense of presence and spatial awareness.

Aiming is achieved by physically raising the controller, and firing operates conventionally. The resulting experience is undeniably intense, requiring rapid reactions to threats from all directions. Ensuring a clear play space is crucial to prevent accidental collisions during gameplay.

Extended play sessions can lead to discomfort from the headset and feelings of nausea. VR is a demanding medium, and individual tolerance may vary.

In conclusion, Doom 3 – VR Edition is a worthwhile experience for those with the necessary hardware. While the VR implementation isn’t flawless, it represents a significant step forward. The forthcoming Sony Playstation VR for PS5, particularly the promise of a simplified single-cable connection, holds considerable potential. The immersive environments envisioned in works like Ready Player One are increasingly within reach, and numerous compelling VR titles offer engaging virtual experiences.
